PENNAN, Aberdeenshire

I’m honouring one of my favorite places in the whole world with my first post.  Its not a big city or a tropical paradise but it holds a very special place in my heart so it felt right to share.

Drive an hour or so north from Aberdeen and you will travel along the gorgeous Morayshire coast, a breathtaking part of a fabulous country and voted in the top 10 coastal areas of the world by National Geographic.  Along the coast road you see many signs to fishing villages big and small.  The best of the lot, in my opinion, is Pennan.  Easy to miss but not easy to forget once experienced.  A few minutes below the coast road lies  this pretty fishing village, protected by the cliffs that surround it.

A classic fishing village, Pennan is home to a handful of gorgeous whitewashed cottages, a pub, a village hall and a spectacular rocky beach with obliging waves crashing against the shore.  In the 1980’s the village was chosen as the backdrop for the classic movie ‘Local Hero’ with its pub and red phonebox immortalised.  The pride of the locals in their big screen heritage is clear to see in many places throughout the village.  Not least our chosen cottage accommodation where photos adorn the walls.

If you are lucky you may find a craft or art fair at the village hall, or if not you can pick up some lovely hand made cards outside one or two of the cottages.  Honesty prevails here.

The village is now predominantly made up of holiday homes with a few locals remaining on a day to day basis.  The harbour is still used; you may even see a fishing boat coming back in to shore with a catch.  If you visit during winter, bring a flask and a picnic because the pub closes its doors from October to March – demand is not high enough any longer for local pubs to stay open 365 days a year.  You can make use of one of the many sea view benches or picnic tables and just enjoy the peace for a moment or two.

Pennan is place to go to reflect, to enjoy some calm and to enjoy being with the ones you love.  My husband and I visit at least once a year, not simply for our love of the place but our beloved mother sleeps in the sea at the far end of the beach.  If you do visit be sure to say hi for us.
